I create most of my paintings by designing them as a series. This method seems to build a lot of inspiration for me, and also helps me to avoid getting bored, since I have a number of paintings I can work on at any given time!
Whenever I get to a point in a painting where I just cant seem to get my head in it anymore, or my creativity is beginning to stale, I just shift my focus onto another painting in the collection for a while, and then come back to it when I'm ready.
This is a typical set of thumbnail sketches I might create at the beginning stages of a series. Now, I don't always create all the paintings that I design in my sketches, but it is a great way to build a number of ideas in a short time! Generally I will pick and choose a few of my favorite sketch ideas, and those will be the paintings that come to fruition.
This is a preliminary drawing created from one of the above mentioned thumbnail sketches that made it passed the idea phase, and will become a fully realized oil painting.
Please forgive her hands... I didnt realize i hadn't drawn them in when I posted this picture. Hopefully, you guys get the idea though!
